Swarm of sugar-crazed wasps heading for UK but this product can stop them entering your home

A 'fake nest' which is stopping wasps from entering homes and gardens is being praised by shoppers who say it works 'immediately' on the pesky insects.

It comes as temperatures continue to soar this week with another heatwave on the card for most of the UK. In Manchester the mercury will reach highs of 31C at the end of week, before rain is due the week after. Experts are warning though that because of the frequent warm weather the UK is a breeding hot spot for insects.

Those who are thinking of hosting barbecue parties or are spending a lot of time in their gardens to enjoy the sunshine are being warned to avoid sweet foods and drink as this will attract the new swarm of wasps, being predicted to come to the country from Europe.

Sebastien Pommereul, manager of Stop wasps - Stop pests, told BMFTV: "This year, we are doing between 10 to 12 interventions a day. Last year, we were at five."

The year is already being dubbed as the year of the wasp on social media but there is one product, among other tips, that aim to help and even completely get rid of wasps from entering your home and garden, reports the Echo.

Shoppers have been buying 'fake nests' to hang in their gardens which aim to trick the wasps from entering their homes or coming near them. The Plai natural wasp repellent, which is available in a two-pack on Amazon for just £8.99, is being praised for getting rid of the stinging creatures without actually harming them.

The Plai Natural Wasp Repellent, Wasp Deterrent (Amazon)

One person said the nest has worked "immediately" and said: "Strange that such a simple invention gets rid of wasps immediately! Clever! I have bought so many of these!"

While another said: "To be honest, I was sceptical about buying this whole idea, but I haven’t seen a wasp around my patio area since it was put up. I’m absolutely delighted and hoping this prevents a repeat of last summer’s wasp's nest in my chimney, which fell into my fire hearth."

Some have said the product only lasts a year before it begins to rip from weather conditions if left outside all year round. Amazon has sell other 'fake nests' that are similar to the Plai one's including these Luigi's World's repel fake decoy nests for £12.99 for a pack of three. There's also these Roots & Shoots paper hanging decoys for a more environmentally-friendly option.

Other ways to get rid of wasps include:

  • Avoiding leaving barbecues unattended - these can attract wasps as the insects will take the food back to the nest
  • Avoiding wearing perfume in the garden - perfume is said to attract wasps
  • Avoid swatting them away
  • Avoid sweet products where possible such as fizzy drinks and ice lollies to stop attracting them in the garden.
