Swansea City transfer news as signing talks confirmed, Cyrus Christie future twist and ex-Swan involved in furious bust-up

These are your Swansea City headlines on Wednesday, August 17.

Signing talks take place

Head coach Russell Martin revealed talks would be taking place today between himself, chief executive Julian Winter and head of football operations Josh Marsh in light of the injury suffered to Joel Latibeaudiere on Tuesday night.

Swansea were already in the market for a right wingback but were being frustrated in their attempts to bring one in. Those efforts will only intensify now, with Latibeaudiere's shoulder injury looking serious.

"He gives us so much. The reason he's played for us and in so many positions, he's one of the first names on the team sheet for the way he trains, his willingness to run, be aggressive and defend," explained Martin.

"It's purely because of his mentality and desire to be the best version of himself. He's so appreciated by us as coaching staff and the rest of the players. What he gives us is so important so we'll miss him for sure.

"It's going to be a long-term one. We'll have to sit with Josh and Julian tomorrow (Wednesday) and see if we're able to do something. We'll have to see what the diagnosis is with Lats and how long he's actually going to be out for. It's another blow to tonight."

Christie leaves Birmingham City

The future of Cyrus Christie has taken a twist, with the former Swansea loanee now no longer training with Birmingham City.

Christie, who is now a free agent after leaving Fulham in the summer, had been with the Blues in a bit to find a new club.

But boss John Eustace has confirmed he has now left the building.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Watford the head coach said : “Jordy (Jordon Mutch) is with us still, Cyrus hasn’t been with us for a few days now. If he needs to carry on training, as I have said in the past, they are both my pals, I have played with them both. So if they want to train with us to keep them fit I am doing them a favour.”

Swansea wanted to re-sign Christie after his decent six-month spell in south Wales but links went cold. They may well now revisit the situation.

Byers' angry reaction

Former Swansea midfielder George Byers was involved in a furious bust-up during Sheffield Wednesday's defeat to Peterborough United on Tuesday night.

Byers was sacrificed when his Owls team-mate Reece James was sent off, and Byers' reaction to his early substitution sparked a physical exchange with Jamie Smith, a member of manager Darren Moore's staff, on the side of the pitch.

Post-match, Moore said : "I’ll find out now and when I see you on Friday we’ll have a little chat.

"After the sending off I was just thinking in my head about getting in at half-time. Firstly you don’t think anything like that is going to happen - but I’ll ask the questions to both men, and see what was said.

"I would almost 100 per cent put it down to frustration, heat of the moment and the pulsating atmosphere. If it’s anymore than that I’d be really surprised. I’m not really alarmed by it or anything, but I will look into it, and when we have the press conference on Friday I’ll happily speak about what went on."

Bittersweet for Whittaker

Morgan Whittaker grabbed his first goal for Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night but it ended up being a bittersweet evening for the striker.

The 21-year-old scored the Pilgrims' only goal in a 5-1 drilling at the hands of Charlton at The Valley.

“I’ve been waiting for a chance to start in the league,” said Morgan. “It is bittersweet. I tried to be positive when I had it, and I’m really happy to get the goal, but the night isn’t how you want it to go.

“I wanted to be positive. If you are direct then things can happen like that. I just kept going and the space opened up. I threw my right foot at it and it found the corner.”
