Swansea City reject bid for Michael Obafemi amid Burnley interest

Swansea City head coach Russell Martin has confirmed they have rejected a bid for striker Michael Obafemi.

The Republic of Ireland forward was named on the bench for Swansea’s game against Stoke City last night, with Burnley said to be interested in his services.

And Martin confirmed after the 1-1 draw at the bet365 Stadium that an offer for the 22-year-old had been knocked back, adding that the bid was insufficient to be entertained.

“There has been a bid from a club yes - we have rejected it,” Swansea’s head coach said.

“[It is] nowhere near the valuation that the owners, Josh [Marsh, head of football operations], Julian [Winter, chief executive] and the football staff feel that Michael warrants.

“There is nothing in that at the minute because it is so far away from where we feel it needs to be. We want to keep every player we have got - we haven’t got a huge squad.”

Asked whether he would be open to selling Obafemi before tonight’s deadline, Martin added:“I am the head coach - it’s not my decision.

“I feel like I talk to you guys (the media) too much on those decisions and then get opened up for criticism. It’s not my decision. Any decision on any player is totally out of my remit.”

Clarets boss Vincent Kompany namechecked Obafemi when quizzed on their interest yesterday.

“We’ve been in for a few players now,” says Kompany.

“At this stage of the season I can’t even keep up with who we’re being linked with.

“There’s this thing still where although he’s a really good player, he’s a Swansea player so unless a club engages with us, I’m not really willing to engage with individual cases.”
