American Jessica Pegula has continued her giant-killing run at the Australian Open by downing world No.5 Elina Svitolina in the fourth round.

The world No.61 won 6-4 3-6 6-3 to book a quarter-final encounter against either American No.22 seed Jennifer Brady or Croatian No.28 seed Donna Vekic.

Before this tournament, the 26-year-old had won only three previous matches at grand slam level.

Pegula was gifted the only break of the first set courtesy of an untimely Svitolina double fault.

The Ukrainian surged back to level the encounter at one set all.

The pair traded service break in the decider before Pegula went ahead ahead 5-3 and held her nerve to serve out the match and book a spot in the last eight.

"In the second set I started to over-hit a bit," said Pegula.

"At the end of the second set I think it was important I got some games in there.

"I'm hitting the ball really well, I'm seeing it well - I thought I served well, which is really important against the best players."

Svitolina has often been saddled with the unofficial tag of' "best female player yet to win a major" - and so it will remain.

In 33 grand slams, her best results remain semi-final appearances at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2019.
