Suspected coronavirus case sparks GP surgery evacuation

A GP surgery near Ellesmere Port has had to close suddenly after a suspected case of coronavirus.

The news was broken to patients of the practice on its Facebook page.

Patients told the ECHO they had been turned away at the door when turning up for scheduled appointments this morning.

The statement from Great Sutton Medical Centre in Old Chester Road, Great Sutton which was suppose to be open from 8am to 6.30pm today states: "The surgery is closed until further notice as a precautionary measure following a suspected case of coronavirus ."

Patients turned away included Charl Gelder who told the ECHO she was refused access by staff waiting at the door just after 10.30am.

She said "I went there for a appointment and got turned away the door as there's a suspected case of the coronavirus ."

Ironically callers to the medical centre's phone number are played a recorded message urging people displaying symptoms of the coronavirus to stay away and "self isolate".

The development comes as three more people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK.

This now means the total number of cases in England to 17 and the UK to 19 , England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said.

The first case of coronavirus in Wales has been confirmed by the Welsh government

19 people have tested positive (PA)

Wales' chief medical officer Dr Frank Atherton said: "I can confirm that one patient in Wales has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

"All appropriate measures to provide care for the individual and to reduce the risk of transmission to others are being taken.
