A suspect who shot two people in a Delaware hospital, killing one, was taken into custody on Tuesday, police said.

The 23-year-old man was apprehended in Philadelphia after a manhunt following a fatal shooting prompted the hospital into lockdown and forced employees to barricade themselves inside rooms.

The shooting was reported around 3.30pm at Wilmington hospital, said the city’s police chief, Wilfredo Campos. He declined to release information about the victims’ identities or the condition of the person who was shot and survived.

ChristianaCare, which operates the hospital, said in an emailed statement it was diverting patients from its emergency department and “taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our patients, caregivers and visitors”. The lockdown of the hospital was later lifted.

Late on Tuesday, officials said they had determined the shooting was a “targeted, isolated incident”.

Violence has been a persistent problem at hospitals across the US.

Wilmington, which has about 71,000 residents and is Delaware’s largest city, is about 25 miles south of Philadelphia.
