Susanna Reid 'missing' from GMB day after emotional tribute to Piers Morgan

Susanna Reid is missing from today's Good Morning Britain.

The presenter yesterday gave an emotional speech live on-air about her time working with Piers Morgan, who quit the show on Tuesday after his opinions on Harry and Meghan's interview with Oprah Winfrey stirred controversy.

The usual line-up saw Susanna and Piers host Monday through Wednesday, with Susanna staying on for an extra day on Thursdays with Ben Shepherd, before Kate Garraway filled in her spot on Fridays.

But this morning viewers were surprised to see Kate sat next to Ben, rather than Susanna.

Charlotte Hawkins kicked off the programme at 6am, telling viewers: "We're here all the way through until 9am this morning, with Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway joining us at 6.30am."

Susanna fronted yesterday's show with Ranvir Singh, taking the time to address Piers' absence.

Tuesday had seen him storm off set after a heated clash with weatherman Alex Beresford, whom Piers had invited on to discuss Meghan's bombshell claims during the Oprah interview.

Susanna said: "A number of viewers will of course know the news and many of you will not, and be surprised that Piers isn't here this morning.

"Piers and I have disagreed on many things and that dynamic was one of the things that viewers loved about the programme.

"He is without a doubt an outspoken, challenging, opinionated, disruptive broadcaster - he has many critics and he has many fans.

"You will know that I disagreed with him about Meghan's interview, he himself clarified his comments about her mental health on the show yesterday.

"There are many voices on GMB, and everyone has their say - but now Piers has decided to leave the programme."

She added: "Some of you may cheer and others will boo, he has been my presenting partner Monday to Wednesday for more than five years.

"During Brexit, and the pandemic, and other issues, he has been a voice for many of you - and a voice that many of you rallied against.

"It is certainly going to be very different, but shows go on and so on we go."

Piers had expressed doubt over much of what Meghan said in the interview, including her claim that she struggled with suicidal thoughts.

And addressing his exit outside his home yesterday morning, he said: "I'm just going to take it easy and see how we go.

"I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that's entirely their right.

"I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.

"If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.

"I think it's fair to say, although the woke crowd will think that they've cancelled me, I think they will be rather disappointed when I re-emerge.

"I would call it a temporary hibernation."

He added that his departure from ITV had been "amicable."
