Susanna Reid 'devastated' over schools shutting and admits she 'struggles' with home learning

Susanna Reid has admitted that she has been left "devastated" over the news that schools are shut during a third national lockdown.

The Prime Minister ordered schools to shut - after just one day back after Christmas - and told people again to "stay at home" in a return to the stark messaging from March.

Mr Johnson, who warned the weeks ahead would be the "hardest yet", said the lockdown in England would last at least until mid-February, when he said 13m of the most vulnerable should have had their first Covid vaccine dose.

GMB presenter Susanna, who is mum to sons Finn, Jack and Sam, admitted that she had struggled with home learning.

She made the admission while speaking to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on the ITV programme today.

Sir Keir said that he had wanted schools to remain open but that it had been inevitable that they would close in a national lockdown.

Susanna said: "So now schools are closed... I mean, I'm devastated by the fact that schools are closed because I think we really are damaging a generation of children."

"It's tough," Sir Keir agreed.

She continued: "I understand why. I struggle with home learning and we have access to resources. How are you going to ensure that the government delivers the laptops and the access to home learning resources that a lot of people don't have?

"Because this is going to open up a gap in attainment - hugely - between private and state schools and within schools themselves."

Sir Keir replied that that was "exactly the problem", adding: "We're back in parliament tomorrow, so I'll get my first chance in parliament to press them on this."
