Susanna Reid clashes with Tory minister on 'missing' Boris Johnson over 4 years on GMB

Susanna Reid ended up clashing with Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi after she grilled him on why Prime Minister Boris Johnson hadn't appeared on Good Morning Britain for almost four years.

The prime minister notoriously avoided being interviewed on GMB by hiding in a fridge in December 2019, leading host Piers Morgan to slam Johnson for being a "coward".

This comes after the Government boycott the ITV daytime show for seven months last year after Piers Morgan's combative interviews with ministers at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Posing the question of Johnson's absence on GMB today, Susanna said: "Is there a reason why the day before a huge number of local elections and important by-elections, council elections, national elections, we have not seen your party leader?"

"I think that's unfair, Susanna," the Tory MP responded. "Because Boris is out and about, up and down the country, doing media. He was all over the news channels yesterday, the day before yesterday regularly out on the press conferences reporting-"

Susanna interjected: "But why doesn't he do interviews? It's been almost four years and we haven't interviewed him as prime minister. It's quite remarkable for the leader of a party not to be interviewed - and I know that we're not alone in that on this programme! Other programmes have put in bids for him today and been turned down.

"What is it about the prime minister that he doesn't want to be directly asked questioned?"

But Zahawi repeated that it was "unfair" as Johnson does press conferences where the media ask him questions.

Shaking her head, Susanna responded: "But the media don't get follow-ups. They just get to ask their question."

She went on to point out that there are "issues around Boris Johnson's transparency and integrity".

This comes after claims a Tory donor had been asked to fund a nanny for Johnson's baby and the Electoral Commission's investigation into whether an offence has been committed after reports that a Tory donor initially paid £58,000 towards refurbishing his Downing Street flat - which was not declared.

Zahawi responded by insisting that Johnson pays for his son's childcare and that the prime minister has been "very, very open" that he paid for the refurbishment.

Both Susanna and Zahawi began speaking over one another as the interview began to get heated.

The Tory MP said: "He's been all over the country. Every visit he takes questions from journalists and you play it on your channel. So it's unfair of you to characterise this as Boris Johnson not doing interviews."

Stunned, Susanna responded: "It's not unfair of us to want to interview the prime minister! I mean, voters would want to see an interview with the prime minister - I don't think that's unfair or unreasonable."
