Survey: Summer vacation spending expected to rise in Japan

Households are expected to spend an average of 83,814 yen on summer vacation this year, up 2,434 yen from a year earlier and the first rise in three years, according to a survey conducted by Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Co.

The firm believes the average outlay will increase because many companies raised their employees' summer bonuses due to improved corporate earnings.

Asked how they plan to spend their summer vacation, with multiple answers allowed, 75.9 percent of respondents said they would stay home, followed by 37.1 percent who were planning to travel domestically.

Meanwhile, 31.9 percent said they would return to their hometown, and 19.3 percent planned to go to a swimming pool, amusement park or theme park.

"This year's fierce heat is expected to encourage consumer spending on summer items as well," said Yuichi Kodama, chief economist at Meiji Yasuda.

The online survey was conducted on men and women aged 20-59 in early July, with 1,120 people giving valid answers.
