First picture of surfer killed after shark tore his leg off in 'banned area'

A surfer who was killed by a shark after entering a banned area of water has been pictured for the first time.

Kim Mahbouli, from Saint Denis, in Paris, was paddling off the coast of Reunion Island when a huge predator ripped his leg off at the thigh.

The 28-year-old was pulled from the water and rushed back to shore near the small fishing town of Saint-Leu but died after losing a huge amount of blood.

Local authorities had urged the public to stay away from the stretch of water after a huge spike in the number of shark attacks recently.

The incident was the 24th shark attack in the waters surrounding the island since 2011.

It is believed Kim's pals had all been wearing shark-repelling bracelets on their ankles - but the Frenchman did not use one.

Locals fear Kim may have been killed by a bull shark.

Reunion authorities had warned the coastline was becoming more dangerous to surfers with the presence of bulls amid the changing water temperatures.

They are notoriously aggressive and are responsible more attacks on humans than any other shark.

They are extremely muscular and can grow to eight feet in length and weigh around 20 stone.

Stretches of surf around the island are known for being extremely dangerous areas for surfers and swimmers.

Despite the Reunion's waters being less than 1,000 square miles in size, it's believed 16% of the world's fatal shark attacks between 2011 and 2011 happened there.
