Supermarket cuts cost of three essentials weeks after being declared 'most expensive'

A supermarket has made three price cuts to essentials a fortnight after being declared the 'most expensive'.

We reported earlier this month how Tesco worked out dearest in our weekly comparison of shopping essentials, taking the unfortunate title from Morrisons for the first time in six months.

It didn't last long and by last week Morrisons was back at the bottom of our league after increasing the price of its 300g pack of chicken from £2.49 to £2.59, the highest price of all six supermarkets.

But Tesco seems keen not to repeat its misfortune and has this week dropped the price of three of the eight items - the only retailer to make any changes to this week's shopping basket, which, as well as chicken, looks at the cost of a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans and mince.

Lidl is second cheapest (Manchester Family / MEN)

The reductions might just be pennies, but it means the supermarket, with a bill of £11.45, is now working out as fourth cheapest, behind Aldi's £11.11, Lidl's £11.23 and Asda's £11.40.

It's only just pipped Sainsbury's though, where the bill is just a penny more at £11.46, while Morrisons remains at £11.57.

The three products reduced at Tesco are coffee, teabags and beans, all from its budget Stockwell brand. Rather than having one overall budget range - like Morrisons' Savers, or Asda's Just Essentials - Tesco has a number of budget brands instead, including Hearty Food Co for products such as pasta, sauces, pizza and frozen chips, and Woodside Farms for the likes of bacon, gammon, pork, sausages and chicken.
