Supercomputer writes off Rangers Europa League charge with Gio van Bronckhorst challenged to defy the data

Excitement is building at Rangers after Giovanni van Bronckhorst 's men saw off Red Star Belgrade.

Enduring the hostile Marakana atmosphere alongside the mammoth results in the previous rounds against Borussia Dortmund have some wondering how far the Scottish champions can go.

The quarter-final draw against Braga has given Rangers the best chance they could have hoped to make a push for the semi-final.

But can they see of Atalanta or RB Leipzig to bring back memories of Manchester '08? Is it realistic that they can go one better?

The boffins on statistical analysis website FiveThirtyEight have put their heads together on the remaining teams in the competition.

Their algorithm has worked out the probabilities for every remaining team to progress to the semi-finals and the showpiece in May.

They have also worked out the chances on James Tavernier lifting the trophy in May. And it's not good reading for the Rangers fans.

The club are now the lowest rated team out of the last eight when it comes to winning the showpiece in May.

They have been handed just a 3 per cent chances of adding the Europa League to the Ibrox trophy cabinet - less than quarter-final rivals Braga who sit at 4 per cent.

They have been handed an 11 per cent chances of making it all the way to Seville, which is once against the lowest of the remaining sides.

The stats hand Rangers a 50-50 chances of beating Braga and progressing to face either RB Leipzig or Atalanta.

Barcelona are the clear favourites with the bookies and the supercomputer to win the trophy with a 32 per cent chance of success.

Van Bronckhorst has already defied the odds to reach this stage and will need to do it all again.

Chances of winning the Europa League

Rangers - 3 per cent

Braga - 4 per cent

Eintracht Frankfurt - 4 per cent

Lyon - 7 per cent

West Ham - 10 per cent

Atalanta - 14 per cent

RB Leipzig - 28 per cent

Barcelona - 32 per cent
