Sunglasses indoors? It’s a yes from Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron addressed global leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday. But his criticism of the Trump administration wasn’t the only thing that drew attention.

Macron has also made headlines for his unexpected eyewear choice: a pair of blue-tinted reflective aviator sunglasses worn indoors. The move, usually reserved for bleary-eyed rock stars and fashion royalty, did at least have a medical explanation.

The French president appeared in a similar pair of sunglasses at a military event in France last week, excusing the ‘unsightly appearance’ of his red eye. Reports have said that he appears to have a sub-conjunctival haemorrhage, aka a broken blood vessel in the eye that is painless and usually clears within a couple of weeks.

More than enough time for Macron to go full Anna Wintour with an incidental fashion statement that has well and truly caught the public’s attention. Why, exactly, is hard to say. To deem it ‘cool’ might be a stretch, but there’s certainly a sense of confidence, an appealing devil-may-care bravado, to a pair of indoor sunglasses.

It helps that out-of-context shades feel particularly on-trend right now. Just look at the 2026 Golden Globes, which saw Jacob Elordi pair his Bottega Veneta tuxedo with a pair of Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses. Meanwhile, Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie stole the show in a pair of Saint Laurent aviators (also paired with a pristine tux). And it wasn’t only the men; Miley Cyrus also accessorised her red carpet look with sunglasses, also by Saint Laurent.

The brand behind Macron’s glasses is yet to be confirmed, but a French maker seems likely. They bear a resemblance to Louis Vuitton’s Attitude Pilot sunglasses, especially those from the LVMH brand’s autumn/winter 2008 collection. Other sources suggest they could be a custom pair from Vuarnet Horizon, another heritage French company.

Whether you find it cringe or cool, here are some sunglasses in case you want to get the look. Or, you know, have a temporarily red eye.
