Follow live coverage as Sunderland face Everton today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Liverpool look to fend off competition from Arsenal, Manchester City and more.

The race for the Champions League places should also be a compelling battle, with a fifth place possible for English teams. Manchester United’s latest rebuild under Ruben Amorim sets expectations high once more after a dismal season last time out.

Meanwhile, it’s Burnley, Leeds United and Sunderland who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Sunderland AFC 1 - 1 Everton FC

Sunderland vs Everton

22:02

The spoils are shared at the Stadium of Light, where Sunderland and Everton played out a 1-1 draw. The Black Cats controlled large periods of the contest, with 60.8% of possession and an xG of 1.09 to their opponents' 0.86. Yet, it was the visitors who struck first in the 15th minute, thanks to a superb individual effort from Ndiaye. However, the Black Cats were rejuvenated after the break and, within 42 seconds of the second half, were level through Xhaka's deflected strike. Regis Le Bris' side looked the more likely to grab a winning goal, but had to settle for a point, which denied them the chance to return to second place in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Everton climb a place to 14th after averting a third straight defeat. Both sides have home games to look forward to on Saturday before the international break. Sunderland are back at the Stadium of Light against leaders Arsenal, while Everton welcome Fulham to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Thanks for joining us today. Until next time, goodbye!

FULL-TIME: SUNDERLAND 1-1 EVERTON

Sunderland vs Everton

21:53

Seemingly still frustrated from that earlier opportunity, Alcaraz takes out Hume and has his name taken by the referee.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:53

Sunderland have another long throw that Everton deal with. The Toffees suddenly have the chance to counter, with Grealish sending Alcaraz on his way. The latter has a team-mate for support, but he appears caught in two minds, and the hosts eventually recover to dispossess him. That was a complete waste of a great opportunity to win the match.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:50

The fourth official indicates a further six minutes will be played at the end of this second half. There is still plenty of time for either side to find a winner.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:49

Sunderland with a chance to potentially snatch a late winner here, with Mukiele lining up a long throw. It is not his best delivery, though, and Everton clear their lines.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:47

The visitors are enjoying a little bit of momentum. Grealish leads their charge down the left, cleverly skipping away from his marker and crossing, but it is just too close to Roefs, who gathers.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:45

GOOD TRY! Everton enjoy a rare venture forward as the clock ticks into the final five minutes. The ball sits up nicely for Mykolenko, who unleashes a neat strike from distance, and Roefs is forced to beat it away.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:42

Iroegbunam also enters for the Toffees. O'Brien is the player to make way.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:42

Everton also make two changes. Alcaraz replaces Dewsbury-Hall in the first of them.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:41

Isidor is also given a breather with Brobbey coming on in his place.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:40

Sunderland introduce fresh legs for the final eight minutes. Traore makes way to be replaced by Talbi, who scored the winner at Stamford Bridge.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:40

CHANCE! After his initial corner is cleared, Xhaka whips in a delicious first-time cross. It is begging to be attacked and Mukiele is unmarked, but he cannot keep his header down.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:37

With four goals to his name already this season, Isidor is looking to become the fifth Sunderland player to score five goals in 10 or fewer Premier League appearances for the club. He would follow in the footsteps of Steven Fletcher, Kevin Phillips, Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:37

Sunderland continue to carry the greater threat. Traore and Mukiele link up down the right, with the latter delivering a low cross towards Isidor. However, the latter does not connect cleanly with his strike, and Pickford saves easily.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:33

A tally of 20 points in 1999-00 represents Sunderland's best return after the opening 10 games of a Premier League season. Victory here would see them equal that and, more importantly, return to second place in the table.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:33

Everton's hearts are in their mouths as the ball appears to strike Keane on the arm in the box. VAR takes a look, but deem there not to be enough to warrant the awarding of a penalty.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:31

Isidor sees grass and explores it with a strong run towards the penalty area. Though the angle narrows, he tries his luck anyway, but cannot steer the shot on target.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:31

Everton need a response from somewhere. They have enjoyed just 38.3% of possession in this second half, while they are yet to register a shot on goal. The visitors are severely missing a creative spark.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:28

The Black Cats headed into the weekend having collected the most points from losing positions in the Premier League this season (seven). As things stand, they will increase that tally here, but would love to make it three as opposed to one.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:23

Sunderland, following another Mukiele throw, appeal for a penalty after the ball appears to catch Gueye on the arm. There was not much the Everton midfielder could do in all fairness, though, and the referee is not interested in pointing to the spot.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:20

A concern for Everton as Ndiaye, who opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, with the attacking midfielder unable to continue after picking up a knock. He limps off to be replaced by McNeil.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:18

This contest is finely poised as we reach the hour mark at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland have all of the momentum since the restart, and Everton must find a way to counter them.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:15

Everton make their first change. Barry, who missed that glorious first-half opportunity, looks unimpressed as his number is displayed on the fourth official's board. Beto comes on in his place.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:15

Grealish is the target again, this time following a tangle with Xhaka. No player has earned more fouls and created more chances from open play in this season's Premier League than the Manchester City loanee.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:12

Hume mistimes his sliding challenge on Grealish, who he subsequently clatters into. The Sunderland defender swiftly goes into the book.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:12

Whatever Le Bris said to his players at half-time is clearly had the desired effect. Sunderland are quickly back on level terms, thanks to what was Xhaka's first Premier League goal since May 2023.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:11

GOOD SAVE! Sunderland have their tails up. Le Fee's long-range strike takes a deflection that leaves Pickford grounded, but the Everton goalkeeper manages to reach and palm the effort away.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:07

Le Fee had the presence of mind to lay the ball into the path of Xhaka, whose deflected strike opens his Sunderland account.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:06

XHAKA!!! WHAT A START TO THE SECOND HALF! 1-1! Just 42 seconds have elapsed when Le Fee, whose initial effort is blocked, tees up Xhaka. The skipper's first-time effort deflects off Tarkowski, helping the ball in off the underside of the crossbar.

Sunderland vs Everton

21:04

The players return to the pitch for the second half, which Xhaka commences.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:54

Everton lead and Opta's live win probability calculator makes them heavy favourites to hold onto their advantage, with a 69.3% chance of victory. Sunderland's chances of turning their deficit around are rated at 10%, with a draw at 20.7%.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:52

Ndiaye's individual brilliance is the difference at the Stadium of Light, where Everton lead Sunderland by a goal to nil. The Toffees, who had an xG of 0.93 to their opponents' 0.35, sounded an early warning when Garner drilled narrowly wide inside the opening 10 seconds. However, the breakthrough did arrive in the 15th minute with Ndiaye embarking on a jinking run into the box, before bending a shot beyond the dive of Roefs. The Black Cats grew into the game and ended the half stronger, but they are still seeking their first shot on target in the contest.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:49

HALF-TIME: SUNDERLAND 0-1 EVERTON

Sunderland vs Everton

20:48

There will be a further two minutes played at the conclusion of this first half.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:47

The hosts continue to apply the pressure with another Mukiele long throw into the box. Ballard attacks the ball at the far post, but cannot get clean contact, and Keane clears the danger.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:45

Traore looks to pull the strings for Sunderland on this occasion. The winger emarks on a jinking run into the box, but he cannot find a way through the stubborn Everton defence.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:44

Isidor is on the move again as he looks to latch onto Hume's clever ball in behind the Everton defence. Pickford is alert, though, and quickly off his line to collect.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:41

All of a sudden, the Black Cats have their tails up. Following a patient build-up, Le Fee threads the ball into the area for Isidor. However, Keane is alert and quickly across to deny Sunderland's top scorer a clear sight on goal.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:38

Sunderland look to apply the pressure and a deep cross is only cleared as far as Geertruida. The Leipzig loanee tries his luck on the volley and it is well-struck, but just a bit too high.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:37

There have been quite a few niggly fouls in this game, disrupting the flow as a result. The latest sees Reinildo stay down following a challenge with O'Brien. The Sunderland man appears to make the most of it in all fairness, and the referee shows no interest in getting his cards out.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:34

To complete an unhappy few minutes, Barry has his name taken by the referee after catching Sadiki with a late sliding challenge.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:34

Barry, in for Beto up front, squandered a great opportunity to make his mark there. His movement to escape the marker was brilliant, but he would love to have that chance again.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:31

WHAT A CHANCE! That's a bad miss! Sunderland are sloppy in possession and invite pressure from Everton, who work the ball out to Grealish. The latter delivers a delicious ball to the far post, where an unmarked Barry somehow fires over from three yards out. It should be 2-0!

Sunderland vs Everton

20:28

There is anticipation among the home fans as Mukiele lines up a long throw into the box, and there are plenty of Sunderland players forward. However, his delivery is well-read by Everton, who are also awarded a free-kick for a foul.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:27

The atmosphere inside the Stadium of Light is unusually flat at the midway point in the first half. Sunderland have struggled to get going and need a spark from somewhere.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:25

OFF THE POST! The woodwork denies Grealish a second goal! The winger receives the ball from Gueye on the edge of the box and takes aim. His shot goes through the legs of Xhaka and beats Roefs, but rattles the base of the goalkeeper's right post.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:23

Sunderland felt Ndiaye's goal should have been ruled out for a foul in the build-up. That could explain their loss of discipline. It does not make sense, though. They are already a goal down, and certainly do not want to be a man down, too.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:20

That was silly from Sadiki. Believing he should have been awarded a free-kick, his frustration at not getting the decision leads to him committing a late challenge on O'Brien. He can have no complaints at going into the book.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:19

Mukiele follows his team-mate into the book for dissent. Sunderland have lost their discipline a little, and need to calm themselves.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:17

NDIAYE!!! WHAT A GOAL! 1-0 EVERTON! The Toffees take the lead in sublime fashion! After Sadiki is dispossessed near the touchline, Ndiaye only has eyes for goal. The attacking midfielder embarks on a jinking run into the box, showing great balance along the way, before curling beautifully beyond Roefs.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:15

Worth a go! A long ball towards the edge of the Everton box leaves Keane disorientated, with the defender losing track of it. Traore looks to capitalise by striking on the volley, but it is well wide of the target and never troubling Pickford.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:15

You must go back to October 2005 for the last time Everton lost three successive Premier League games without scoring under Moyes. Their recent struggles in front of goal were epitomised by that indecision heading into the final third.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:10

Gueye looks to drive the visitors forward on this occasion from midfield. However, his attempt at a throughball is a poor one, and Roefs is able to race out of goal and tidy things up for Sunderland.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:10

Everton embark on their first genuine attack of the contest. Grealish leads the charge down the left flank and cuts the ball back into the area. It eventually falls to Barry to strike, but his effort is blocked by the Sunderland defence.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:08

Of course, Moyes is back on familiar turf today. The Scotsman took charge of Sunderland during their previous Premier League campaign in 2016-17. Although, it ultimately ended in disappointment, with the Black Cats relegated from the top flight.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:06

That would have been an ideal start to Moyes' 550th match in charge of Everton. Only Thomas McIntosh, Harry Catterick and William Cuff have managed the Toffees on more occasions.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:03

JUST WIDE! The Toffees go straight onto the attack, with a long ball ricocheting kindly into the path of Garner. The midfielder unleashes a well-struck left-footed volley that flashes whiskers wide of the target. What a start that would have been!

Sunderland vs Everton

20:02

Thomas Bramall is our referee today. He blows his whistle and Garner gets the game under way for Everton.

Sunderland vs Everton

20:01

The teams are making their way out onto the pitch. As they prepare to get started, let's take a look at Opta's live win probability calculator. It makes Everton the slight favourites at 42.4%, with Sunderland's chances rated at 32.2% and a draw at 25.4%.

Sunderland vs Everton

19:47

Meanwhile, Everton make a single change from their defeat to Tottenham. It comes up front with Barry chosen to lead the line ahead of Beto, who drops to the bench. Pickford faces Sunderland for the first time since leaving the club for the Toffees in 2017. Today, he makes his 303rd Premier League start for Everton, a tally only bettered by three other players. Jarrad Branthwaite and Nathan Patterson remain unavailable for the visitors.

Sunderland vs Everton

19:47

For the first time in the Premier League this season, Sunderland have named an unchanged starting line-up. It is hardly surprising given their heroics at Stamford Bridge nine days ago. Geertruida makes a first home league start in defence, while Alderete and Adingra return on the bench. Romaine Mundle, Dennis Cirkin, Habib Diarra, Leo Hjelde and Aji Alese comprise the Black Cats' injury list.

Everton find themselves in 15th place with 11 points to their name, though they will climb to 12th with a win here. David Moyes' side are seeking a response after suffering back-to-back defeats, including their first at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last time out, when Tottenham ran out commanding 3-0 victors. Not since October 2011 have Everton lost three successive Premier League games under Moyes, who oversees his 550th match in charge of the club in all competitions today.

Sunderland vs Everton

19:36

Sunderland have hit the ground running on their return to the Premier League after eight years away. The Black Cats have earned 17 points from their opening nine games, and will reclaim second place with victory here.
