Sunderland thug bragged 'it's a cruel world' as he videoed himself attacking unconscious man

A Sunderland thug bragged "it's a cruel world" as he videoed himself viciously attacking a man who lay unconscious.

Jordan Scott carried out a "disturbing" attack on a man who lay unconscious on the floor after he'd taking cocaine and Valium at some point in the early hours of August 27 2021. The 24-year-old delivered kicks and punches to the man and even used his foot in an attempt to strangle him at one point.

As the victim was unconscious at the time of the cruel attack he could not remember how he sustained his various injuries. It wasn't until weeks later that another man saw the video of the attack - which Scott had filmed himself - and reported it to the police. A month after the attack, whilst Scott was in custody, he then went on to launch an attack on two prison officers.

On Monday, Scott, of Hendon Burn Avenue, Hendon, Sunderland, appeared at Durham Crown Court via link from HMP Durham to be sentenced for attempted section 18 wounding with intent and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. He had pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court heard that the victim - who had been taking cocaine and Valium and had no recollection of the attack - woke up in hospital after sustaining facial injuries including two black eyes and cuts to his scalp. Martin Towers, prosecuting, said there were also markings on his neck which suggested "possible strangulation".

He said: "About three weeks after the incident a witness was among a number of people in receipt of a recording which shows the defendant attacking the victim, who was unconscious, with kicks and stamps." The video was then reported to the police and Scott was arrested.

The court heard that the video depicted a "disturbing" attack, and Scott could be heard saying; "It's a cruel world" as he kicked and stamped on the "defenceless" man. Scott could also be heard saying he could have "killed" the man due to the violence he meted out.

Scott's offending continued on September 22 2021 when he was in custody and two prison officers were called to his cell after he was found to be having a fit and "under the influence". As one female officer attempted to help, he became "aggressive" and ended up kicking her in the face twice. Mr Towers said Scott continued to "take swipes" at the officer before he headbutted and kicked another. He was then taken to a segregation unit.

The court heard Scott had a "poor record", including 40 previous convictions. In 2018 alone, he was dealt with for committing nine battery offences.

Vic Laffey, defending, said: "He's a young man with a poor record but he appears to be coming to terms with the fact he's got to get his act together. He has issues with anger management and misuse of substances. He's expressed a desire to avoid offending going forward.

"He's completed a number of anger management courses in prison and he's determined to find worthwhile employment when he is eventually released." Mr Laffey added Scott has "problems with seizures" and has "great remorse" for carrying out the attack.

Sentencing Scott, Judge James Adkin told the court the attack video was "disturbing" and "unprovoked". He said: "It couldn't be provoked as the victim was unconscious. The violence was sustained and brutal and was captured on video by yourself. You kicked him on the ground and used your foot to try and strangle him. You can be heard saying 'it's a cruel world' and referenced the fact you nearly killed him."

Judge Adkin added: "Why you chose to record the violence, I'm not sure. But you were gloating as the man was completely defenceless." Scott was handed a seven and a half year extended prison sentence, four and a half years of which will be custodial. A 10 year restraining order was also imposed.
