Sunderland's League Cup date confirmed, as is move for striker who never fulfilled promise

The date of Sunderland’s League Cup tie at Accrington Stanley has been confirmed.

The sides will meet at the Crown Ground on Tuesday, August 13, kicking-off at 7.45pm.

The Black Cats made two trips to Accrington last season – one in vain as their match was abandoned after 73 minutes in December due to a waterlogged pitch.

It had been due to be the first time the teams had ever faced one another competitively, but instead that was February’s 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light .

When the game was replayed in April, the Black Cats ran out comfortable 3-0 winners .

The sides now meet in the first round of the League Cup, before meeting again in Lancashire on September 14 for another League One tie.

Meanwhile, as expected, Aldershot Town have confirmed the signing of striker Connor Shields, released by Sunderland at the end of last season.

The 21-year-old moved to the Stadium of Light from Albion Rovers in January 2018, but did not live up to his promise or make a first-team appearance.

He spent last season on loan at Alloa Athletic, scoring three goals in 34 appearances for the Scottish Championship winners and Challenge Cup runners-up.

Aldershot were due to be relegated from last season’s Conference after finished 21st, but were reprieved because of the financial problems at Gateshead.
