Sunderland owner Stewart Donald issues an update on transfers and the club's projected takeover

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has broken his Twitter silence to issue an update on transfers and the club's projected takeover.

US-based businessman Mark Campbell is expected to complete a takeover of the club and become Sunderland's majority shareholder before the end of the month.

It was believed that he would acquire 64 per cent of Donald's stake in the club and 10 per cent of Juan Sartori's stake. That would leave Campbell with a 74 per cent stake, with Donald and Sartori each holding 10 per cent and Charlie Methven retaining his six per cent stake.

However, when replying to a concerned fan on Twitter he reassured fans he will remain at the club next season with more than a 10 per cent stake.

He tweeted: "I will be here next season and many beyond - with more than the reported 10 percent Stake!! Don’t always believe what you read."

Donald also issued an update on transfers. Sunderland have sold Lamine Kone and Reece James this summer, while Robbin Ruiter, Max Stryjek, Adam Matthews and Luke Molyneux were all released on a free transfer.

But there has been no sign of any incomings as of yet and when asked whether Thursday would be a 'big day' for Sunderland's summer transfer business, he replied: "Fixtures out (is) always a big day. Hopefully some signings soon but not tomorrow - won’t be long until new players arrive I’m sure."
