The pandemic situation in Sudan is “worrying for all,” said Professor Siddiq Tawer, member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) and Chairman of the High Committee for Health Emergency.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Tawer said he was concerned by recent surveys that found a growing rate of daily coronavirus infections and mortalities in recent days.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Khartoum reached 250 on Sunday and 200 on Saturday compared with only 30 cases per day two weeks ago, triggering alarm about the spike in infections.

He blamed the rise for pandemic fatigue that led to non-compliance with precautionary measures, such as social distancing and mask wearing.

Tawer said the authorities were observing the situation and will likely tighten restrictions.

Most worrying, he added, was that the virus was now infecting young people, which will only lead to an increase in cases.

Authorities have already kicked of a vaccination campaign by inoculating healthcare workers and the elderly. Sudan has received 800,000 AstraZeneca vaccine shots and 250,000 shots of China’s Sinopharm vaccine.

Sudan has confirmed 29,542 Covid-19 infections, 23,858 recoveries and 2,003 deaths.
