Succession star Jeremy Strong wanted to cut 'cringeworthy' rap scene

Succession star Jeremy Strong is no stranger to the show’s dark humour – but one scene in season two was so “cringeworthy” he was once convinced it should be cut.

The moment unfolds in the second season’s eighth episode, “Dundee”.

Strong’s character, Kendall Roy, decides to pay a public tribute to his father Logan Roy (Brian Cox) with a shockingly misguided rap performance.

The scene has lived on as a cult sequence among Succession fans.

In a new interview with The Wrap, Strong said he originally had significant reservations about the scene, fearing that it was too cringeworthy to stick the landing.

“I advocated cutting it immediately,” he said, adding that the script came with the mention: “‘Yo — kick it MC.”

“And I said ‘Oh, God, it’s going to be silly,’” Strong added.

However, Strong said that Succession creator Jesse Armstrong “always knows how to go too far”, which helped give him confidence.

“But I did think, ‘This might just be silly and I don’t know how we pull this off,’” he noted.

Succession‘s second season wrapped up in October last year.

The show has been renewed for a third season, though production hasn’t started yet.
