Sturgeon dismisses Sunak as a ‘wannabe’ in scathing tweet

Sturgeon's simple but cutting response attracted much praise.

NICOLA Sturgeon has hit out at Tory leadership candidate Rishi Sunak, calling him a “wannabe” on Twitter.

Sharing a picture of the cover of the Daily Express, which ran the headline: “Rishi: I’ll stop Sturgeon in her tracks”, Sturgeon tweeted: “Wondering how many opposition leaders/wannabes I’ve now heard this from…” followed by a "thinking face" emoji.

Her simple but cutting response attracted much praise, with Karen Adam, SNP MSP commenting: “Trying to separate Nicola from the whole movement is old school divide and rule, bullying.

“They have to remember there are millions of us Scots behind her. We are more than one person. But that one person has tremendous backing.

“Get behind or get out the way any future PM!”

Sunak said, “Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP pose an existential threat to our cherished Union. Arguing that we should ignore them is dangerously complacent.

“We can’t just bury our heads in the sand and pretend they aren’t there, we need to stop them in their tracks. And that’s exactly what I would do as prime minister – holding the SNP to account for its failings and personally ensuring that the UK Government has a laser focus on delivering for every part of our United Kingdom.”

His comments came in response to controversial remarks made by fellow Tory leadership candidate Liz Truss. Speaking at a hustings event in Exeter, she stated, “I feel like I’m a child of the Union, I really believe we’re a family and we’re better together and I think the best thing to do with Nicola Sturgeon is ignore her.”

Encouraged by applause, Truss added: “She’s an attention seeker, that’s what she is.” When asked about the possibility of an independence referendum if she were to become prime minister, she simply replied: “No, no, no”.

Sturgeon broke her silence on Truss' inflammatory remarks yesterday on Twitter with a nonchalant jibe, tweeting: “Spotted this cute seal in beautiful Argyll,” she shared. “I think s/he might be a bit of an attention seeker,” followed by a winking-face emoji.
