Stunning Ayr town centre artwork is removed after council plea on conservation zone

A stunning mural which lit up Ayr town centre has been erased from memory today.

The unique piece of artwork, the brainchild of Scott McAnally in September, took 45 hours to create.

At 25-foot tall, the design turned heads with three stunning paintings on the Lorne Arcade.

The main event was a silverback gorilla.

But after an order from South Ayrshire Council to whip down the art, the stunning design has gone.

Arcade bosses had initially appealed the decision, which came after council chiefs ordered its removal due to being in a conservation area.

But workmen were today seen whitewashing the art, meaning no appeal will now take place.

A council spokesman told the Ayrshire Post: "Planning permission is required as the mural is in a conservation area.

"However an appeal has been received, so no action will be taken by the council until that appeal has been heard."

Former Marr College pupil Scott won rave reviews when coming up with the idea last year.

And he was even nominated for a top council award - for the same piece of art.

Scott was named runner-up in the Art and Design Media category at the recent South Ayrshire Youth Forum Awards.

At the mural's unveiling, he told the Post: "I think Ayrshire has been left behind.

"You look at places like London and Glasgow and they’re full of this stuff."
