Student virus infections almost triple to 3,303 in Japan

Since schools fully reopened in June, 3,303 primary and secondary school students have been infected with the novel coronavirus nationwide, the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry announced Thursday.

While 13% were infected at schools, 55% contracted the virus at home.

Between June 1 and Nov. 25, 1,252 elementary students, 782 junior high students, 1,224 high school students and 45 in special needs schools were infected. At the end of August, when the data was announced last time, there were 1,166 cases, which means the number has almost tripled in less than three months.

Household infection routes accounted for 1,824 cases, of which 916 were elementary school students, 504 were in junior high and 388 were in high school. Infections at schools totaled 445 cases with the highest being 293 at high schools, followed by 76 at elementary schools and 75 at junior high.
