Stubborn Mercedes drivers' 45-minute tunnel stand-off caught on video

Bystanders attempt to persuade the two drivers to back down (Brad Haverly/YouTube)

A 45-minute stand-off between two Mercedes drivers who refused to give way in a tunnel has been captured on video.

Footage of the incident in Maidenhead shows an elderly man in his car a couple of feet in front of a convertible driven by a woman - with both refusing to move.

With a large queue of cars backed up behind the stubborn drivers, a number of people can be seen attempting to persuade them to back down.

Video of the scene was captured and posted on YouTube by Brad Haverly, who told the Mail Online: "Legally she was in the right, but I think the video shows quite clearly the older man was two-thirds of the way through and she committed to driving through too late and should have given way."

Around 10 minutes into the stand-off, when Mr Haverly begins filming, one bystander berates the woman, saying: "How old are you? She's having the terrible twos."

The video then cuts to 10 minutes later, when the man returns to the woman and shouts at her: "There are mums around here trying to get their kids from schools so just f****** back up. What is wrong with you?"

Turning to the older driver, the man suggests that he appears to be unfit to drive.

"Look, if you can't back up mate, when the police get here they're going to take your licence off you because you're not capable of being on the road," he says.

When the older man does try to back up, he begins to reverse towards the tunnel wall and is only stopped when onlookers shout to him.

Another woman tells the woman driving the convertible: "My teenager daughter and her friend are walking home, and if anything happens to her it will be your fault."

Eventually the man is guided out of the tunnel, and the other driver and queue of cars are able to drive through.
