Strictly's Neil Jones is keen to be paired up with male celeb for 2021 series

Neil Jones has expressed that he would like to be part of an all-male pairing on next year's Strictly Come Dancing.

This year his ex-wife Katyja Jones made show history when she was put with boxer Nicola Adams as the dancing series' first-ever same-sex couple.

And Neil says he would "embrace" being partnered up with a male celeb and that he thinks it "would be great" for the much-loved BBC show.

“I wouldn’t have a problem with it. I’d embrace it. It would be great," he told The Sun.

“We’ve seen so many great male dancers dance together in the past, so why not? We had Nicola on with Katya this year. If it was with another man I’d do the same.”

This year Neil was pushed to the sidelines and not paired up with a professional but took part in the professional group sessions.

He revealed that he hopes this will not be the case next year, as he added: "Hopefully next year is back to normal again and I can get a partner. Fingers crossed."

Fans did not get to see how far Strictly's first same-sex couple could go as Katya and Nicola were forced to quit the show after Russian dancer Katya tested positive for Covid-19.

Katya - who it is understood to have shown no coronavirus symptoms - has to self-isolate for 10 days while Nicola - who has tested negative - had to quarantine for two-weeks as she had been in direct contact with Katya.

Nicola also addressed the sad news on Twitter as she micro-blogged: "Hey guys! I’m absolutely gutted my Strictly journey has ended so soon, I had so much more to give and so many people to win this for!

The star said he would "embrace" being in an all-male partnership (PA)

"But I just want to say a huge thank you to @Mrs_katjones for being the best dance partner anyone could ask for. Team #outsidethebox."

Strictly Come Dancing's Executive Producer Sarah James said at the time: "We are incredibly sad that these unfortunate circumstances mean that Nicola and Katya are unable to continue on Strictly.

"They are a brilliant partnership and had already achieved so much during their time on the show.

"We'd like to thank them for their commitment and although their time in the competition has sadly come to an end we are hopeful that there will be opportunities for them to dance again in the future."

*Strictly Come Dancing continues this weekend on BBC One.
