Strictly's Kevin Clifton says he 'avoided steamy Rumba with Susannah Reid'

It may not be a popular choice for the pros, but a passionate intense Rumba is always a treat for Strictly Come Dancing fans.

Now the show's ex professional dancer Kevin Clifton has revealed why he did everything he could to avoid the dance with former celebrity partner Susannah Reid - before being unable to avoid it with Frankie Bridge.

On his podcast, he discussed how HRVY and Janette Manrara performed the dance.

Kevin told fans: "It's funny because me and Frankie Bridge did a Rumba in 2014 in the semi-final and I was so trying to avoid Rumba.

"I avoided it with Susanna [Reid] in my first year.

"We got to the stage with Frankie where we’d just run out of options and we sort of had to do a Rumba in the semi-final and I thought, 'That’s it, we're getting eliminated'."

Kevin explained that his aversion to the dance wasn't personal, it was simply that he didn't feel it suited his relationship with former The Saturdays singer Frankie or indeed Good Morning Britain Susannah.

He said on his self-titled podcast: "With me and Frankie, our place in that competition, we were not the sort of steamy, passionate, hot couple of the competition.

"I speak for myself, I’m sure Frankie wouldn’t appreciate me saying that!"

But, the dancer added: "We weren't this hot couple, we were mates and we’d done some fun numbers and it was all very friendly.

"I think by the time we got to the semi-final, if we suddenly did a steamy, passionate. romantic Rumba, it’s going to confuse everybody.

"No one wants to see me and Frankie all over each other in a Rumba."

Kevin appeared on Strictly for seven years before announcing he was leaving in March of last year, to focus "on other areas" of his career.

He won the show with Stacey Dooley in 2018 and the two became a real-life couple and are now living together.
