Strictly’s Amy Dowden posts joyous clip celebrating her new shaved head

Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden has showed off her newly-shaved head in a joyous social media post as she continues her fight with cancer.

Earlier this year the dancer, who has been a Strictly pro since 2017 and danced with celebrities including musician Tom Fletcher, comedian Brian Conley and presenter Karim Zeroual, revealed the news she had been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.

Doctors have also found tumours in other parts of the 33-year-old Welsh dancer’s body.

She has had a single mastectomy and is now undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Despite this, Dowden has remained positive throughout her journey - including in the moment that she revealed she has shaved her head.

Last week, the dancer posted footage of her saying goodbye to her hair. But now she has posted a fun, celebratory video showing off her new look.

On Instagram, the star is seen dancing with some of her loved ones with a baseball cap on her head. She then removes it, puts it over the camera and then reveals her head.

Her family then celebrates in the background as she beams at the camera.

Dowden revealed in the post that fellow Strictly pro Dianne Buswell had inspired the video.

In the caption, Dowden wrote: “When @diannebuswell sends you reel ideas!”

“Fair play dad @richard_dowden you steal the show here with your performance and energy #showman! This brought so much fun to the day! As dancing always does 🙏🎀💖,” she added.

A number of her famous friends and Strictly dancers praised the clip - and the dancing of her father, Richard.

Buswell wrote: “Yessssssss 🥰🥰💗💗💗💗💗 look at you all. @richard_dowden it’s a 10 from me.”

Last week, the star revealed in an Instagram post that she had decided to remove her hair to take back some “control.”

In a caption underneath a video showing members of her family removing strands of hair from her head, she wrote: “Taking control- The hardest step so far. I tried my best to save it. I know it’s only hair but these past few months I’ve had what feels like so much taken away from me that has made me not feel like Amy.

“I’m missing every possible aspect of dancing. I just wanted to keep my identity with my hair and I tried telling myself it wouldn’t go. But I would dread the pain of waking up to the shredding everyday.

“I’ve not been able to take control of this journey so far, but as you can see with some of my loved ones I took the courage and CONTROL.

“It’s going to take some time to get use to and learn to love and embrace but, I’m now focussing-not on the hair I’m losing but the hair I’m going to get back and the happy dancing, tea lover who talks way to fast whilst rolling every rrrrr who is still there inside with or without hair!”

Dowden is not taking part in Strictly this year due to her illness.

She did appear in a title sequence alongside other pros in last weekend’s opening show.

She was also referenced in the launch show as presenter Tess Daly called her “our Welsh Dragon.”

Co-host Claudia Winkleman added: “Amy, from your entire Strictly family we are sending all our love and we can’t wait to have you back on the dancefloor.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6:20pm on BBC One.
