Strictly Come Dancing’s AJ Pritchard has denied that there is any “awkward tension” backstage amid scandal surrounding the latest series.

Pritchard, who dances with Paralympian Lauren Steadman, rubbished rumours of a tense atmosphere backstage during an appearance on BBC Breakfast.

Asked by Charlie Stayt about being on the show, Pritchard said: “When you are fixated on your own performance, you really don’t have time to think of anything else.

“And when it comes to the studio on the Friday and Saturday because we are doing our own performances, everyone supports everyone, there’s never any awkward tension.

“Everyone does want everyone to do great on the night, nobody wants to walk away with a bad score or drop somebody or something goes bad.

“You forget about everything that’s happened in the week or the media.”

Pritchard is the latest star of the show to avoid talking about Seann Walsh and Katya Jones’ kiss scandal during an interview after Karen Clifton dodged the same questions on Wednesday.

Keen to get the backstage gossip, stand-in Lorraine host Carol Vorderman grilled Clifton, who dances with Charles Venn, on the atmosphere following the boozy clinch. ]

Clifton said: “Actually the fact that we've been in the bottom two, that's all we've been focusing on, not to be in the bottom again! Sometimes I don’t even know who I am.

"All we're thinking is how we are going to deal with our dance, but sometimes it's hard to focus on anything else.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
