Strictly Come Dancing issue blow to fans who love themed week in BBC series

Strictly Come Dancing fans will be counting down the weeks until the hit series returns.

The BBC One sequin-filled show will be back in the autumn - but with a few changes.

Fans of the show will be aware that Bruno Tonioli has had to drop out of the 2021 series, leading to long-standing professional Anton du Beke stepping into his place.

There are also four new professional dancers joining the line-up to replace Anton and Janette Manrara who is now hosting BBC Two's Strictly spin-off, It Takes Two.

But bosses have promised the Strictly viewers know and love will be back after a slightly shorter, restricted series due to the coronavirus pandemic last year.

All the themed weeks are back – including movie week, musicals week and Halloween week, all of which had to be shelved last year due to difficulties with hair and make-up under full PPE and Covid restrictions, the Mirror reports.

And a brand new Christmas special will also be back.

As well as that, instead of a reduced count of 12 contestants, a full quota of 15 celebrities will be signed up this year – and bosses hope to be able to bring back a live studio audience to watch them.

However, those who usually look forward to Blackpool week will be disappointed as a trip to the Tower Ballroom is off the cards for a second year.

Executive producer Sarah James told the Mirror: "We’re so thrilled that Strictly will be returning for a full-length series this year, and know how much viewers are looking forward to getting their full Strictly fix and seeing the return of much-loved specials."

She added: "We are all so sad that we won’t be able to get to Blackpool this year but can’t wait to be back dancing at the one and only Blackpool Tower Ballroom in the future."

The series will again be hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, who last year had to stand at least two metres apart at all times.

The 2020 series was won by Oti Mabuse and Bill Bailey - the second year in a row Oti took home the Glitterball trophy.

The celebrity line-up for the upcoming series is yet to be revealed but rugby legend Ugo Monye and BBC Breakfast's Louise Minchin are among the rumoured contestants.
