Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special's star George Webster's real life from Leeds upbringing to CBeebies stardom

He recently made history as the first CBeebies presenter with Down Syndrome. Now, George Webster is going to be taking to the dance floor during Strictly's Christmas special.

George, 22, was first noticed by BBC execs when he appeared in a Bitesize video, in which he dispelled myths about Down Syndrome. It was this video that got him noticed by the CBeebies team, who swiftly recruited him as the channel's new presenter last year.

Hailing from Leeds, George has quickly become a favourite on the show - even winning a BAFTA this year for his presenting work. His addition to the CBeebies team has been praised by disability charities and viewers alike, for helping to improve representation for those who have Down Syndrome.

But, on Christmas Day, George will be swapping his CBeebies role for the glitz and glamour of the ballroom. He will be paired with dancing pro, Amy Dowden. It is a dream come true for George, who told the BBC that he "loves" Strictly and watches it every year.

He said: "I’ve always dreamed of being on the show one year and I’m so excited to be on this year’s Christmas Special! To be partnered with Amy is such an honour, we get on so well, she’s so lovely and an amazing dancer.

"I’m looking forward to being "Strictlyfied". Bring on the glitter and everything else. I can’t wait to perform on the Strictly dancefloor."

Life before TV

George is originally from Rawdon in West Yorkshire and he went to school at St. Peters Primary and Benton Park High. He studied for his GCSEs and got qualifications in Maths, England, Media Studies, Food Tech and sport.

He then went on to study a Creative Digital Media Production BTEC at Shipley College, which no doubt came in handy for his new career on TV. However, the idea of being on screen was not alien to George - as he had been acting since he was eight years old.

The youngster started out at StageDoor Theatre and Music School in Guiseley, starring in a number of shows during his time at the school. He has since appeared in a number of productions, including some short films and even had a cameo role in The Railway Children Return.

These days, alongside his work with CBeebies, George acts as an ambassador for the disability charity, Mencap. When he is not busy keeping the little ones on CBeebies entertained, he enjoys running and public speaking.
