Street dancing and beer swigging drags Jesus Christ Superstar into millennial era

It’s been almost 50 years since Jesus Christ Superstar first lit up the stage in 1971.

And now, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera has been revived for a new generation.

Street dancing, hoodies and a beer swigging cast bring the musical thoroughly into the millennial era.

And dim golden lighting and smoke machines ensure the set feels more edgy bar than theatre.

Meanwhile, the chorus are covered in glitter and Judas’s hands drip with silver to mark his guilt - making the performance scream of excess.

But it’s not just the set that sparkles.

There are stunning performances from Robert Tripolino (Jesus), Ricardo Afonso (Judas) and Sallay Garnett (Mary).

The stars blast out many of the musical’s famous songs, Superstar, I Don’t Know How To Love Him and Heaven on Their Minds alongside a heavy live rock band.

Former X Factor winner Matt Cardle also makes an appearance as he takes on the role of Pontius Pilate - the Roman governor.

Matt proves his acting is as good as his singing as he relishes the role and even serenades the crowd with his guitar.

The show’s stint at the Barbican follows two sell-outs at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2016.

And fans both old and new will be riveted by director Timothy Sheader’s take on the classic tale.

For those who’ve never seen it - we can guarantee it’ll have you praying for more.
