Strange Bristol noise: Locals think they know what 'long rumbling sound' was last night

Locals think they know what caused a strange 'long rumbling noise' in Bristol last night.

Dozens of people took to social media yesterday (Friday, November 26) to report a sound which was "similar to thunder but longer."

It was heard in Ashton, Ashley Down, Bishopsworth and St George, but no one could explain where it came from.

Now locals think they have it sussed.

In a discussion on Facebook, one person commented: "It was fireworks. I could see them from the Sea Walls up on the downs but it was like someone had set off all of the fireworks for a display in one go."

Another person replied: "Was fireworks saw them from the portway they were massive."

"It was fireworks saw them up close near the downs," a third said.

"Heard and saw them in Combe dingle, AMAZING fireworks."

But others are sceptic that it was fireworks lighting up the sky.

"Couldn't be Fireworks it was over too long a range," one person said.

"Didn't sound like fireworks..."

Another added: "I heard it in Southmead but thought it was the beginning of the bad weather we are expecting."

There are also reports of an explosion in Ashton last night.

Posting on Facebook, one woman said: "Live in ashton was explosion over on the quarry could see the flames coming up over behind the hill."

It comes after one person commented last night: "I saw the hills around Ashton Court engulfed in a massive orange explosion. I thought it was fireworks but I've never seen anything like it before."
