Strait of Trump? President shares AI map rebranding the Middle East

  • President Donald Trump reshared an AI-generated map on Truth Social, labeling the Strait of Hormuz as the Strait of Trump, following previous instances where he deliberately referred to the passageway by that name.
  • The Strait of Hormuz, which facilitates 25 percent of the world's maritime oil trade, has been largely closed amid Trump's conflict with Iran, causing global oil shortages and driving Brent crude oil prices above $125 a barrel, leading to increased gas prices across the U.S.
  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom publicly criticized President Trump on X, questioning why he would not “open the Strait of Trump” in light of the escalating oil and gas prices.
  • This is just the latest move in a growing list of instances in which Trump attached his name to various ventures, including real estate, products, and, during his presidency, government properties such as the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute of Peace, as well as military equipment.
  • Future proposals include renaming significant transportation hubs like New York’s Penn Station, Washington’s Dulles International Airport, and Palm Beach International Airport after him, alongside plans for his portrait on U.S. passports and national park passes, and his signature on U.S. paper currency.
