Storm Goretti LIVE: Scores of Heathrow flights cancelled and tens of thousands without power as 'weather bomb' hits UK

The UK is facing major travel disruption on Friday as Storm Goretti continues to batter the country.

The Midlands is expected to see the region’s biggest snowfall in a decade with wintry conditions possible on the fringes of London.

At least 69 flights to and from Heathrow Airport were cancelled on Friday, disrupting more than 9,000 passengers.

East Midlands Airport was forced to close its runway early in the morning “due to heavy snowfall”, while Birmingham Airport suspended operations overnight.

More than 60,000 homes were without power as of 9am after Storm Goretti hit the UK on Thursday packing winds up to 99mph in the South West.

Over 80 trees brought down by Storm Goretti on island near Cornwall

20:54 , Georgia Bell

More than 80 trees were brought down by Storm Goretti on a tidal island near Cornwall, causing chaos for locals.

Darren Little, the head gardener of St Michael's Mount, described feeling heartbroken at the state of the island on Friday morning, the damage to which was 10 times worse than he’d seen in any other storm in the decades he had lived there, he said.

The 51-year-old said the island’s local weather station recorded winds of 111mph on Thursday evening, which was followed by a power cut that lasted until Friday morning.

"At about 6pm, it just got louder and louder, and the waves were picking up, the spray was shooting up in the air.” He recalled

"There was a loud crash, a loud bang, and suddenly our power went out."

He added, "We went out this morning and got our chainsaw equipment out and started to clear the castle path. We had to make sure it was easily accessible in case of emergencies.

"We started at 8.30am and finished around 4.30pm."

Mr Little said that between 80-100 trees were brought down by the storm, constituting most of the trees on the island.

He explained: "It's more devastating for us as a gardener seeing the hard work you've done over many years, then everything's wiped out within about six hours.

"We've had bad weather before, we've had various storms over the years, but (in the past) we lose about six or seven trees.

"I'm heartbroken as well for all the gardeners."

Thankfully, none of the island's residents were hurt by the incident, but some of the buildings have sustained structural damage.

Mr Little expects that the clean-up will take around three months, but anticipates that it will take a further 18 months before the area is regenerated.

Travel disruption caused by Storm Goretti also affecting criminal justice system

15:11 , Megan Howe

Disruption on the roads also affected the criminal justice system, with no remand prisoners at all being transported to Birmingham Crown Court.

An aborted sentencing hearing for a HMP Birmingham inmate convicted of the attempted murder of his wife was told only six members of staff were on duty in the court's cell block.

Judge Richard Bond informed barristers attending the hearing remotely: "I am really sorry we are in this position but the Prison Service have not produced anyone at Birmingham Crown Court today."

The case was later adjourned to February 6 after the judge ruled a video-link appearance was not satisfactory, given the seriousness of the case and the need for an interpreter.

'Significant increase' in ambulance callouts due to cold weather, NHS says

13:59 , Megan Howe

London Ambulance Service has reported seeing a significant increase in the number of ambulance callouts for trips, falls and illnesses brought on by cold weather.

The capital has endured wintry conditions this week, with icy streets likened to an ice rink, alongside periods of wet and windy weather.

As the cold snap continues, health chiefs are urging Londoners to wrap up warm and to check in on vulnerable friends, neighbours and family members.

Winter weather has also given rise to the number of 999 calls across the capital, putting even more pressure on emergency services and A&E.

Peter Rhodes, Deputy Director of Ambulance Operations and Gold Commander at London Ambulance Service, advises: “With cold temperatures and wet weather, we’re seeing an increase in 999 calls relating to trips and falls and other health conditions – such as cardiac and respiratory illnesses – that can be made worse by the cold weather.

“Please stay safe by ensuring you wrap up warm and wear suitable clothing and footwear if you’re going outside – especially if it’s icy. Wearing two or three lighter layers can keep you warmer than one woolly or thick jumper.

“Please also look out for family, friends and neighbours who may be at risk and vulnerable in colder weather. If you know someone is on their own – please do reach out to them.

“Remember to use our services wisely and contact your GP, pharmacy or NHS 111 if you need urgent medical advice fast or unsure what to do. If you suffer with an underlying medical condition please ensure you have enough of your regular medications. ”

Severe weather blamed for more water outages in Kent

12:10 , Megan Howe

South East Water (SEW) said a "series of burst water mains" due to the cold were responsible for 6,500 customers in Tunbridge Wells being left without water earlier this week.

While those supplies returned on Thursday, more outages are expected on Friday afternoon.

The company said Storm Goretti has slowed the recovery of water storage tanks since the pipes burst, which will mean demand outstrips supply.

Incident manager Mike Court said: "Customers will experience no water and intermittent supplies later this afternoon while demand for water outstrips the amount we can pump into the network.

"I know how disruptive any interruption to supply is and I am incredibly sorry to all customers and businesses who have been impacted and will be impacted again later today.

"Due to the storm last night, we have experienced outages at a number of water treatment works sites and river water quality issues across Kent and Sussex. This is slowing down the recovery of the drinking water storage tanks across our supply area.”

Last month, 24,000 properties in Tunbridge Wells spent days without any running water, and almost two weeks without drinkable water.

Mysterious pink sky over Birmingham likened to 'Stranger Things'

A mysterious pink sky over Birmingham has been compared to living in ‘Barbieworld’ or to something straight out of Stranger Things.

The sky turned a striking neon pink glow last night during heavy snowfall in the city and caused quite a stir among residents.

But the unusual light was not a natural phenomenon.

It is believed to have been caused by floodlights at Birmingham City FC, reflecting off low cloud and falling snow.

Storm Goretti 'continues to cause problems', the Met Office has said

10:36 , Megan Howe

Storm Goretti "continues to cause problems" as a mixture of rain, sleet and snow batters some areas, the Met Office said.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said the storm will continue to clear throughout Friday, but many still face a "wet, cold, miserable day".

He said: "Storm Goretti continues to cause problems through Friday morning, particularly across parts of eastern England, where we are seeing a mixture of rain, sleet, and still some snow falling.

"The heavy snow over the West Midlands and Wales has now eased but of course, is still lying on the floor and still causing some disruption.

"Gradually, through the day, the storm will continue to clear away, but it's going to still be a wet, cold miserable day across much of eastern England, and still icy across parts of northern Britain as well."

Employers 'must not punish workers' who cannot travel into work

10:07 , Megan Howe

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has said employers “must show understanding” for those whoa re unable to travel into work in severe weather conditions.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “This will be a stressful time for many people – especially with forecasters sounding the alarm. Employers must show basic common sense and understanding.

“No one should be pressured into making dangerous journeys. And workers shouldn’t be punished with lost pay or forced to take holiday because the weather makes travel impossible.

“Good bosses will already have bad weather policies in place so staff know where they stand. They will also recognise that when schools are closed some parents will not be able to work as they have to care for their children.”

Anger rises over ungritted pavements and cycle paths amid icy weather

07:56 , Megan Howe

Councils are facing backlash from Londoners over a lack of grit on pavements, roads and train station platforms as they braved icy conditions on their commute this week.

Many likening its streets, pavements and cycle paths to an ice rink as rain and plunging temperatures caused dangerously slippy conditions underfoot.

Each borough council is responsible for managing and gritting local roads and nearby pavements, typically in advance, with priority given to main routes and hills.

However, residents have hit out at London councils, with some claiming they were “sliding all over the place” due to poorly gritted surfaces.

What is a red weather warning? An explainer

Thursday 8 January 2026 16:02 , Georgia Bell

How do yellow, amber, and red weather warnings from the Met Office differ?

Yellow warnings: The most common. They warn you that severe weather is possible and to consider planning for impacts to either travel, power, or property.

Amber warnings: Prepare you for travel disruption and highlight a potential risk to life and property

Red warnings: Rare and only issued a few times over recent years. They mean that the Met Office believes dangerous, possibly life-threatening weather is imminent, and you should immediately take action to protect yourself and others.

A red warning has been issued today for parts of south-west England as Storm Goretti approaches.
