Storm Franklin's intense gusts send tree falling on Merseyrail train track

Storm Franklin's destruction has been captured as intense gusts caused a large tree to fall across a train track.

Heavy winds and rain have caused chaos across the region today, with trains cancelled and roads blocked.

Merseyrail was forced to cancel trains from Hunts Cross to Southport after a tree uprooted and blocked the track.

Images published by Network Rail show a tree strewn across the line as crews worked tirelessly to clear the blockage between Ainsdale and Freshfield.

However, there were further issues for Merseyrail, as a second fallen tree in Ince Blundell caused the rail replacement bus service to be delayed.

In a tweet, posted at 8.52 pm, Merseyrail said: "A bus service is now in operation conveying passengers from Formby-Southport.

"Due to a fallen tree blocking the road at Ince Blundell, some Rail Replacement bus services are expected to be delayed."

Elsewhere in the region, a flood warning was issued by the government covering parts of Merseyside.

They warned of possible flooding along the River Alt from Huyton to Hightown.

The website said: "Flooding is possible at River Alt and other watercourses from Huyton to Hightown including, Kirkby, Fazakerley, Maghull, Formby, Aughton, Sefton and Lunt."

The Met Office's latest update confirmed further periods of very strong winds tonight and Monday.
