Shocking video shows Storm Francis winds tear roof off Penarth restaurant

Part of the roof of a restaurant in Cardiff Bay that was gutted by fire last week has been ripped off during Storm Francis.

Dramatic video captured on Tuesday, as gusts of up to 70mph battered Wales, shows roofing materials being torn from the building and scattered across Penarth Marina.

The Deck re-opened three weeks ago after a major refurbishment but staff and customers had to be evacuated when the building caught fire on Friday, August 21.

The newly-refurbished restaurant was left in a "very sorry state" after the fire and the owners said they were "devastated" after putting their "heart and soul" into reopening the business.

Huge plumes of smoke were seen coming from the building, which used to be called Pier 64 and was previously owned by Welsh football star Craig Bellamy, on Friday.

The cause of the fire is not yet known but the fire service is investigating.

Now the fire service is back again to deal with the latest incident at the restaurant caused by the strong winds battering the area.

Following the fire, Penarth Marina issued a statement on Friday.

They said: "Just to keep you updated, at around 7.45pm this evening we were alerted that a fire had broken out at The Deck at Penarth. Emergency services were immediately called, all customers and staff were evacuated and the fire was successfully extinguished shortly after.

"Please rest assured that the marina, the facilities and most importantly all of our customers' boats are safe and secure. Access to the main walkway is currently closed while we work with the emergency services, but we will open this back up as soon as we can.

"Huge thanks to all of the staff, customers and emergency services for your efforts and cooperation this evening."

Damage is likely to be extensive but there is no indication of how long the restaurant will remain closed for, especially considering the most recent damage during Storm Francis.

There was extensive disruption to travel across wales as fallen trees and flooding blocked roads and railway lines.

Winds of 70mph and rain showers are expected into Wednesday as Storm Francis batters the country.
