Stop Bringing the Outdoors In, It's Time to Bring The Indoors Out: Barbra Streisand's Patio Furniture Exudes Coastal Elegance, Mirroring 2026's 'Exterior Design' Trend

Barbra Streisand.

Our home is more than its interior design; the look of the exterior can be equally important in making a space feel special. Luckily, many of the same aesthetics and principles applied to interiors can also be used in the outdoors. After years of opining on the importance of bringing the outdoors in by using natural materials, in 2026, we're reversing the maxim.

Barbra Streisand's outdoor furniture idea is a wonderful inspiration for those who hope to bring the indoors out. The actor took to Instagram to share a shot from the backyard of her sprawling Malibu compound. It features an unseasonably flourishing Wisteria plant (Wisteria seeds are on sale at Amazon for those who hope to recreate her look). However, the most striking element is her outdoor space is the white wicker furniture.

Wicker furniture has been around for thousands of years, and has recently been used as a stand-out feature of coastal interiors. However, one of the reasons for its longevity is that it can be used both indoors and outdoors. Thus, Barbra's staple is emerging as a major outdoor design trend for 2026.

Lena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Displays at Barker and Stonehouse, explains: 'The biggest outdoor living trend of 2026 is the blending together of indoor and outdoor spaces. As boundaries between indoor and outdoor living are becoming increasingly blurred, garden furniture now mirrors interior design aesthetics, with pieces like wicker and rattan furniture adding warmth and texture to outdoor spaces. This creates cohesive environments that extend the comfort and style of the home into the garden.'

Recreate Barbra's Look at Home

Luckily, Barbra's look is just as attainable as it is stunning. Shopping rattan and wicker pieces is the perfect place to start.

'Gardens and outdoor spaces have fast become an extension of our living areas so it’s important to consider ways in which you can style these spaces to be both beautiful and practical,' advises Lena. 'Rattan furniture will create a laid-back feel and can be adorned with bold scatter cushions to complement the colour scheme of your garden. From lounge chairs to dining suites, rattan instantly adds relaxed character and style to your garden.'

The outdoor can be just as striking as the interior of a home. Barbra Streisand's patio is proof.
