Stirling woman scales up effort to climb hill 101 times

An inspirational Stirling woman is to climb Dumyat an incredible 101 times to celebrate local dementia charity Town Break.

The charity is celebrating its 30th anniversary year of supporting families affected by dementia.

Jan Palmer set herself the ambitious ‘Dumyat 101’ challenge and is set to scale the iconic Ochils hill 101 times in October to help mark the special milestone.

The year-long fundraiser drives awareness of dementia and raises funds for vital support services that make a difference for many people living locally with dementia.

These support services were conducted in an online format due to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, and this year marks the return of in-person events, with online options available.

Chief executive officer Helen Duncan said: “After two long years apart, we’re thrilled to be coming together as a community in locations across Stirling and Falkirk, raising awareness and important funds for families affected by dementia.”

Jan, an NHS nurse, has strong ties to Town Break. She came up with the Dumyat challenge not only as a personal goal but also to give back to a charity that supports both herself and her mother Sheena.

Strategy and engagement officer Daniel Keane said: “This creative fundraiser enables Town Break to continue to provide a wide range of vital services. Each year we rely on many creative fundraisers – like Dumyat 101 - to help us make the Town Break difference.

“There are so many ways to help us, from making a donation, to taking part in one of our fundraising events, to volunteering your time to help us.

“The services we provide for those who rely on us simply wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing support of the community and volunteers who are so dedicated to supporting us”.

Already more than halfway at climb 60 of the 101, Jan is trying to raise as much awareness and money as possible.

She said: “I have always enjoyed keeping myself fit and have completed many Munros including Ben Lomond, Ben Nevis and Beinn Narnain.

“Five year ago, I completed 100 climbs of Dumyat, so it made sense to go for 101 this time.

“Town Break is close to my heart and any donation will go a long way. I have witnessed first-hand the difference that their services make.

“My mother Sheena enjoys coming each week, she highly benefits from many structured events, and I too have made connections and friends.

“Thank you to all family, friends, and of course ,my loyal companion Duffy the cocker spaniel, who has accompanied me on every climb.”

The money raised will be used to support local people affected by dementia and will help Town Break expand their reach.
