Stirling Albion boss makes a third new signing as squad takes shape for next season

Stirling Albion manager Darren Young has added a third new face to his squad following the capture of Robert Thomson and Aaron Dunsmore.

Young went back to his his former club East Fife to capture midfielder Ross Davidson on Tuesday night.

He joins former Stenhousemuir striker Thomson who has agreed a two-year deal at Forthbank while East Fife defender Dunsmore’s loan will become permanent for 2022/23..

Davidson was at Albion Rovers before joining the Bayview club.

New deals have so far been confirmed for eight players with defender Paul McLean and midfielder Kyle Banner the latest to put pen to paper at the end of last week.

Skipper Ross McGeachie, top scorer Dale Carrick, midfielder Jack Leitch, winger Kieran Moore, vice-captain Jordan McGregor and goalkeeper Callum Law have also agreed contracts for next term. Half a dozen departures have been confirmed - strikers Akeel Francis and Dylan Mackin, midfielders Ray Grant, Marc Laird and Kurtis Roberts, and utility player James Grant have all left the club.

There has been no news yet on the futures of winger Nathan Flanagan and central defenders Adam Cummins and Martin McNiff. New striker Thomson weighed in with six goals and six assists for Stenhousemuir in 2021/22 and was an important player for Stephen Swift’s side. His absence through injury for a three-month period mid-season was a blow to the Ochilview club, who just missed out on the play-offs.

The 28-year-old frontman has also played for Dundee United, Dunfermline, Brechin City, Dumbarton, Morton and Alloa Athletic.

Young said: “Robert is a player who has done well over a number of years and I know him well after playing with him at Alloa. He had an operation during last season with Stenhousemuir but he has been back fit and playing since then and hopefully he can come in and kick on.

“He is a big, strong player who can finish as well and link up the play. He will be good for us at set-pieces for and against and is a good character to have in and around the squad as well. We are still looking to bring a few players in.”

Meanwhile, Stirling Albion will discover their Premier Sports Cup opponents when the draw is made on Wednesday, May 25 at 1pm. It will be shown live by Premier Sports via their FreeSports channel.groups of five on a seeded basis but the SPFL has announced that there will be no regionalisation for 2022/23.
