Sting warning after 'hundreds maybe thousands' of jellyfish wash up in Co Down

'Hundreds, maybe thousands' of Lion's Mane Jellyfish have washed up around the coast of a Co Down village.

On Monday evening, the Portaferry Coastguard Rescue Team shared the video of the scene in Cloughey to warn of their 'potent stings'.

In the post they made a direct appeal to dog owners to be careful with their pets around jellyfish.

They said: "Look what has been washed up around the coast of Cloughey today. Hundreds maybe thousands of Lion's Mane Jellyfish.

"Anyone finding a Lion’s Mane jellyfish washed up on the beach should also be aware that the tentacles of this species retain their potent sting long after the jellyfish has died, and dead specimens should therefore never be touched under any circumstances.

"If your dog comes into contact with a Lion's Mane Jellyfish, immediate veterinary attention is advised as anaphylactic reactions are not uncommon."
