Stewartry businesses targeted by thieves over Easter weekend

Two Stewartry businesses were targeted by thieves over the Easter weekend.

Rhubarb in Kirkcudbright lost hundreds of pounds worth of clothing in a raid.

But an attempt to steal cash from a fruit machine at the Paul Jones Hotel in Southerness was foiled.

Rhubarb owner Carolynne Readshaw received a call from the police early on Friday to tell her someone had smashed a door at her gift shop on St Mary Street with a lump of sandstone and stolen clothing.

Carolynne said: “This sort of thing doesn’t happen in Kirkcudbright.

“As always, there was support from people in the town. I was brought biscuits, coffee, chocolate and my inbox is full of messages of help and support.

“Andy Campbell has come and put wood over the glass. He is a star person.

“We haven’t had a quote for the door but I think between the damage and the items that have been taken it will cost more than £1,000.

“I don’t know why it has been us. The piece of sandstone wasn’t just something that you would pick up and it seems as if they have brought bags as well so it doesn’t look as if it is an act of random vandalism.”

Councillor Pauline Drysdale said: “I was totally devastated to hear of something like this happening in Kirkcudbright. It was quite unexpected.

“I was very pleased at the shops and local community taking things in and showing their support.”

A police spokesman said around £300 worth of clothing had been taken in the raid which took place around 2am on Friday.

He added: “Officers will be reviewing CCTV in the town. Anyone with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101.”

On Saturday, three men tried to break into a fruit machine at the Paul Jones Hotel at around 5pm.

They were disturbed by the owner and forced their way past her when she tried to stop them.

The hotel has posted CCTV images and made an appeal for information on Facebook.

A police investigation is under way and anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101.
