Steven Gerrard thanks Walter Smith as emotional Rangers boss cherishes 'wisdom, support and friendship'

An emotional Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has thanked Walter Smith for his "wisdom, support and friendship".

The Ibrox club announced the passing of their iconic former manager aged 73 on Tuesday, following a battle with illness.

Current boss Gerrard had been due to hold a press conference ahead of his team's clash with Aberdeen on Wednesday, but this was cancelled as a mark of respect.

However, Gerrard has still paid tribute to Smith, whom he has previously said was always available to provide advice.

He sent a message of condolence to his predecessor's family and iterated exactly what he meant to everyone at Rangers.

“It is still obviously very raw. It is a very sad day for everyone at the club," Gerrard said.

“Walter was an incredible leader, a very successful manager here at Rangers. He epitomised everything that this club stands for.

“His DNA is all over the club and it is very sad news.

“He has been right behind me since day one. I have had many lunches, dinners, coffees, chats and private times with him in my office.

“He is going to be a very big loss to a lot of people. He is decorated all over the club and he will be forever because he gave many many years to the football club.

“He loved the club, he was honest and genuine. He has made me a better person.”

Accompanying a photo of the pair at Ibrox last season, Gerrard wrote: "Thank you for all your wisdom, support and friendship. You meant the world to everyone at Rangers. You will be sorely missed. Thoughts with Ethel and all of the Smith family at this time. Rest in peace Walter."

Rangers announced the sad news of Smith's passing with a statement from chairman Douglas Park.

He said: “On behalf of the Rangers board of directors, staff and players, I convey my deep condolences to the Smith family. Walter leaves behind a wife, children and grandchildren, all of whom are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

“It is almost impossible to encapsulate what Walter meant to every one of us at Rangers. He embodied everything that a Ranger should be. His character and leadership was second to none, and will live long in the memory of everyone he worked with during his two terms as first team manager.

“I spoke with Walter as recently as last weekend. Even when he was battling illness, he was still able to provide advice and support. For that, I am personally grateful. I know that he continued also to maintain dialogue with senior members of staff, including our manager, Steven Gerrard.

“Walter will be sorely missed by all of us at Rangers.

“Winning 10 top-flight titles as manager, five Scottish Cups and six League Cups, as well as leading his club to the UEFA Cup Final in 2008, he will be remembered by the football community across the world. His spells as Scotland manager as well as managing in the English Premier League underlined his credentials as one of the great modern day football managers.

“However, for Rangers supporters, he was much more than just a football manager. Walter was a friend to many, a leader, an ambassador and most of all-a legend.”
