His side dropped two Premiership points against Hearts on Sunday, requiring an Alfredo Morelos intervention to remain level on points with Celtic at the summit, albeit dropping to second on goals scored.
Captain James Tavernier was the man at fault, badly under hitting a header back to Allan McGregor and allowing the Jambos to pounce.
The keeper kept out Uche Ikpeazu only for Ryotaro Meshino to lob over Connor Goldson as he scrambled back to cover.
Morelos levelled matters before the interval but neither side could fashion a winner following the restart.
"I don't think we were good today, in all honesty," Gerrard said bluntly, speaking to BT Sport.
"I thought we reacted well to going a goal down but really frustrated with how we started the game, the mentality.
"I said before the game, it's so important when you come to a place like Tynecastle that you compete and you earn the right. We didn't do that.
"We got a warning when they hit the crossbar, then we go a goal down.
"We could've been a couple down in 10 minutes of this game, I'm really disappointed with how we started the game.
"From conceding I thought the reaction was decent and we did well to get back in the game but, over the course, we didn't deserve to win.
"We certainly see it as two points dropped. Craig, I'm sure is very proud of Hearts, I think they maxed out with the team they put out.
"They certainly deserved to take something out of the game, we're really frustrated."
Quizzed about the goal itself, the Rangers boss laughed before replying: "Well, it's an individual error, obviously.
"But that comes from how we've started the game, collectively and as a unit.
"I'm really disappointed with the team in the first 10 minutes, we were lucky not to be 2-0 down.
"I'm sure I'll watch that game back and be really disappointed with the game changers we had on the pitch.
"They haven't tested the goalie, haven't created enough.
"We got into some really good positions down the left, down the right and our crossing wasn't good enough.
"There was certainly a lack of quality in the final third and we've certainly got no complaints at all in the outcome of this game.
"Normally, we've been playing a lot better and creating more chances but it just wasn't there today."
