Steven Gerrard makes Rangers plea to Steven Davis as he hails 'magnificent' Ibrox star

Steven Gerrard has pleaded with Steven Davis to forget about retirement and stick around at Rangers next season.

The 36-year-old is out of contract at the end of the year but has been a vital player for the Ibrox men as they cruise towards their first league title in more than a decade.

He's been a key component of a team that has now gone 29 games on beaten in the league this season with 25 wins and four draws.

The Northern Irishman was at his very best at Ibrox as they beat Kilmarnock 1-0 with his manager describing his performance as 'magnificent' during a tough 90 minutes.

And Gerrard admits he hopes he can get him to stay on after the current campaign to continue that form in the middle of the park.

He told RangersTV: I’m a big fan of (Steven) Davis and (Ryan) Jack. They’re very different but Davis was magnificent today. His anticipation, the way he controls games. He allows us to keep going in terms of wave after wave, he plays with real authority and leadership but in a quiet way.

"He sets standards on a daily basis and everyone else follows. I’m absolutely delighted with Steven, I just hope he plays on beyond this season but that’ll be his decision that we respect.

"We’ve missed Jacko, he plays with personality. He’s a fighter, he’s a warrior in there. He does the dirty stuff but he can play with quality. They compliment each other really well. Glen Kamara we never used today but he’s another top one who can compliment them.

"It’s a fantastic midfield three but at home we want to be a bit more aggressive and a bit bolder and that’s why we went with (Joe) Aribo."

Rangers are now edging closer to title glory and are back in European action in midweek against Antwerp in the Europa League.

And although Gerrard has stuck with his 'one game at a time' mentality, he does admit it's only right that Rangers fans are getting excited.

He added: "People should be excited. We’re in a fantastic place. We want the players to try and enjoy this, we realise it’s a really critical and important time but we want them to pump their chests out and really enjoy this journey and story they’ve created so far.

"The squad is getting healthier, Alfredo (Morelos) and Kemar (Roofe) are available on Thursday and Alfredo is available next weekend as well. (Jermain) Defoe has had a couple of sessions. We used (Scott) Arfield today just to give him a taste of it again after being out for seven weeks but we need to get him up to speed in the next five or six days and ready for next weekend.

"We’re in a good place and we just need to take each challenge as it comes now but very positive for us."
