Steven Gerrard 'interested' in Aston Villa as Rangers brace for official approach

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is reportedly "interested" in speaking to Aston Villa over the vacant manager's position.

Record Sport revealed on Monday night Gerrard is one of their top targets with CEO Christian Purslow pushing for the former Liverpool star after Dean Smith was sacked last week.

While Rangers have made clear no official approach has yet been made, it's expected that Villa will make their move in the coming days.

Now the Daily Telegraph is reporting that Gerrard is keen to at least discuss a potential move, with the manager interested in the project in the Midlands.

The newspaper reports that Villa have been carrying out background work on the Liverpool legend and his staff, and hope to have a new manager in place by Monday.

The club's chief executive Christian Purslow has spoken with the squad and told them to expect a new man in the hotseat by next week, with Roberto Martinez of Belgium the most realistic alternative.

Gerrard is the top target though, with Villa ready to bring assistants Gary McAllister and Michael Beale south if a deal can be agreed.

The former worked under Gerard Houllier when he was manager at Villa Park, while Beale is regarded as a future manager in his own right.
