Steven Gerrard hits back at Alfredo Morelos Rangers transfer talk in veiled 'know where it's coming from' dig

Steven Gerrard insists he’s exasperated with the continual speculation over the future of Alfredo Morelos as he admitted he can’t guarantee the striker will be at Ibrox next season.

The Colombian has been at the centre of a transfer window saga since being linked with a mega-bucks move to China midway through his first season at the club.

French side Lille had a bid rejected last season and this summer Porto are reportedly on the trail of the 25-year-old.

Gerrard has previously hit out at mischief-making by the player’s representatives and has grown tired already of the subject again.

Morelos has been given extra time off after he was part of Colombia’s Copa America squad with Gers facing Brighton and Real Madrid in Ibrox friendlies this week.

Asked if he is confident Morelos will remain at a Rangers player Gerrard, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “I don't know. I can't answer that for you.

“I get asked this question every window and every few weeks because you read more about Alfredo in terms of who he is linked with or where he's possibly going to go rather than talk about what he does on a football pitch.

“It's getting a bit tiresome that question. For me, we want the best version of Alfredo, that's all we ever asked for. The manager, the players, the fans, that's all we ask for.

“I've read a lot of stuff around Alfredo. I know where it's coming from but I don't know what's going to happen with him.

“He is due back at some point, we're not sure when but hopefully he'll arrive when he's ready.

“I'm not frustrated, I'm very happy. We're just off the back of a fantastic season and I'm so excited for the next season.”

Gerrard is now keen to get the squad up to speed ahead of next week’s Scottish Premiership kick off against Livingston with Malmo or HJK first up in their Champions League qualifiers.

He said: “The important thing at the moment is to get people up to speed that are already in. Glen Kamara who has been a tournament for example.

“We've got a few injuries in pre-season we need to get more minutes in to their load so they're ready. The important thing for me is the players we have in the door at the minute and if we can in the coming weeks add one or two to the cause and we'll be more than ready.”
