Steven Gerrard backed to be a Leeds United success as key credential outlined in manager search

Martin Keown believes Steven Gerrard has a key credential that would make him a 'very good fit' at Elland Road if he was to become the next manager. The search continues to find a replacement for Sam Allardyce ahead of next season's Championship campaign.

Gerrard has emerged as a leading candidate in recent days and is being heavily linked with the position. He is out of work after being sacked as Aston Villa boss in October after 11 months in charge at Villa Park.

Before then he had been a success at Rangers, helping them to the title once again after a period of Celtic dominance. Fellow relegated side Leicester City are also said to be looking at the former Liverpool and England midfielder.

It's a hugely important summer for Leeds United, with a takeover by the 49ers now very much on the cards. Talks earlier in the week were thought to be a success and it could even be completed by the end of the week.

That is the first item on the list of priorities that needs to be addressed, with the manager situation reaching a conclusion quickly after. Having had three managers in the space of a season, the club needs a period of stability on the pitch and clear direction in the summer about how it plans to recover from relegation.

Keown is an admirer of Gerrard and believes there is a key reason why he can see him being a success if he was to be appointed as Sam Allardyce's replacement. And it centres around one of his tactical traits.

That Gerrard likes to play high-energy football makes him a perfect candidate for a Leeds United team boasting plenty of players who can more than execute that brand of football.

Not only that, but it's a style of play that will go down well with the fans.

Speaking on Talksport on Monday, Keown said: "It is a very good fit for the fans, for the high-energy football he wants to play.

“There are a lot of players in that team who want to press high."
