Steven Gerrard 'angry' after Rangers kid Dapo Mebude targeted with racial abuse

Fizzing Steven Gerrard admits he will hold talks with youngster Dapo Mebude after the teen striker was targeted by racial abuse on Thursday night.

The academy hitman took to Twitter to criticise the person who aimed the abuse at him while playing a game of FIFA.

Mebude was left angry after the incident and blasted: "Some “Rangers” fans being racist towards my family over a game of FIFA.

"Go back to the cotton fields” “you’d be better with a chain in your mouth” making whipping noises."

Now Gerrard has revealed the police are involved and he'll look to hold a face-to-face chat with Mebude later today to help him with the incident.

Rangers have been battling hard against racism with their 'Everyone, Anyone' campaign that has been a huge success among the support.

And Gerrard said: "We as a club have got structures in place to make sure all of our players get the right care, protection and welfare in these situations.

"We condemn it as a football club. I've sat here many times and said we won't accept and tolerate that type of behaviour.

"It's now a police matter so I have to be careful how much I say on this matter.

"I'm really angry and disappointed that this has happened and in the coming hours I'll certainly be trying to get face-to-face with Dapo to try and talk to him."

Mebude has one senior appearance for Rangers, with the 19-year-old coming on as a sub against Kilmarnock during Gerrard's first Premiership campaign at the club.

He has been a regular for the B team this season but is highly-rated at the club.
