Steven Gerrard aims jibe at Manchester United with Michael Owen Liverpool comment

Liverpool great Steven Gerrard aimed a subtle dig at Manchester United after returning to Anfield for the first time as Aston Villa manager.

Having ended Celtic's dominance in Scotland during a successful stint as Rangers manager, Gerrard touched back down in the Premier League at Villa Park when Dean Smith was sacked earlier this season.

Gerrard started well as Villa boss, with victories over Brighton and Crystal Palace.

The 41-year-old also overcame Leicester City either side of more challenging meetings with two Premier League contenders — Manchester City and his former club Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

Naturally, there was plenty of noise surrounding the game as Gerrard made his grand return to Anfield as Villa were edged out 1-0 by a Mo Salah penalty.

For the most part, the ex-England international blocked out that sentiment, though, but did let his guard slip when reviving his relationship and rivalry with United with Michael Owen.

That dig came during a post-match interview with former teammate Owen, who played with Gerrard for Liverpool and the Three Lions before moving to Old Trafford later in his own career.

Where will United finish this season? Have your say in the comments section below.

Owen said: "I'm just wondering... We've all played, we've all gone back to Anfield in different guises.

"I must admit I hated going back to play against Liverpool. What were your emotions like going back? How does it feel taking a team to your home?"

As part of his response, Gerrard said: "If I played for Man United, I'd hate coming back, too."
