Steve Cooper's message to Swansea City's top brass on player contracts

Steve Cooper says Swansea City's top brass are aware of his intentions regarding the futures of his players.

A total of 12 players will be out of contract next summer while the four men currently in on loan will see their deals expire.

Among those who could potentially depart on a free in just over six months is centre-back Mike van der Hoorn who made his 66th consecutive Championship start for the Swans in the 2-1 defeat to Fulham last time out.

And the head coach revealed he has informed chairman Trevor Birch and sporting director Leon Britton of his wishes regarding which players he hopes to keep hold of.

“Half of the players’ contracts are up. That’s one for Leon and Trevor to get their heads round. They know my thoughts and what I want to do but we don’t need to cross that bridge yet,"

“We’re not even halfway through the season. We’ve got three games coming up in the next week so it’s not at the forefront of my mind.

“Leon and Trevor will look after that side of things. My focus is on getting ready for the next game.

“There are a lot of players’ contracts out in the summer, we know that, but it’s not really a discussion point for now.

“We’re working together in collaboration with all of the senior staff and come up with a consensus on what will be right for the football club with a football and a business side to it.”

And on van der Hoorn specifically, "I think everybody’s important. Mike carries a bit of experience now. He plays in a position that plays a vital part in this league.

“I think any centre-back that’s required to play is an important part. We saw Mike and Joe have a really good relationship at the start of the season and Ben (Wilmot) has come in and hit the ground running.”
